Why should someone try ultracycling for the first time?

Ultracycling really is an adventure; it’s lilke travelling into the unknown as you test your physical and mental limits. While you might race solo, the sense of camaraderie that you will establish with your crew means that you never will feel alone. The ultracycling community is incredibly supportive and encouraging. Friends, family and strangers will think you’re nuts (and maybe they’re right!) but they’ll also reach out to support you in ways you won’t believe. For me, ultracycling really brings out the best in the human spirit.

Why do you compete in ultracycling?

I love the idea of finding a challenge that seems beyond my ability initially, and then working hard to overcome it. The sense of achievement is phenomenal and it’s great fun! I also like to think that I can, in some way, inspire others to step outside their comfort zones and embrace challenges that excite them. A real bonus from my ultracycling debut was that it enabled me to raise a significant amount of money for a charity that’s close to my heart.

What is the single best lesson you have learned from ultracycling?

To live in the here and now and enjoy every moment. Ultracycling, for me, is like a form of mindfulness. It’s pointless worrying about the distance ahead or the obstacles that might arise; focusing on the present and savouring every mile of the journey is the best way to produce positive results.

My ultracycling career has been brief but exciting so far. In September 2020 I had the honour of becoming Ireland’s first female solo World UltraCycling Association record holder by setting a cost-to-coast record for Ireland west to east. This was my first foray into the world of ultracycling – and what an incredible introduction it was. The experience has certainly made me keen to participate in more ultracycling events.
